The importance of changing your bedding during allergy season

Could your dirty sheets be making your allergy symptoms worse?

How often do you change your sheets? The answer should be just that, often. If you suffer from crazy seasonal allergies, changing your sheets could be one way to remedy some irritation.

What constitutes often? Some people believe this is a week, while others go a few between changing. There are a host of factors that should be considered including:

  • How much do you sweat when you sleep?
  • How often do you shower?
  • What activities do you do in bed besides sleeping?
  • What do you wear to bed?
  • Who else sleeps in your bed (including kids, significant other and pets)?

Pillows and sheets can harbor dust mites, which can cause allergy symptoms as you sleep and into the following day. According to Mark R. Neustrom, DO, of Kansas City Allergy and Asthma Associates, about two-thirds of people who suffer from allergies are actually allergic to dust mites.

Along with dust mites, your pillow and sheets can also contain body fluids, dead skin cells, acne-causing agents and dirt.

How can you protect yourself while you sleep? Allergy Be Gone has a range of allergy control products available for sufferers of every kind. Some of these products include:

  • Allergy travel kits
  • Bed bug protectant coverings
  • Box spring covers
  • Comforter covers and liners
  • Hypoallergenic sheets and mattress covers
  • Mattress covers
  • Pillow encasings
  • Washable pillows.

An important tip to keep in mind when it comes to allergy symptom prevention has to do with the clothes you wear. Wearing "outside" clothes to bed is one of the worst things you can do. Your work clothes or daily outfits can carry every allergen you have come into contact with. Don't let that sleep next to you for the night.
