Spring cleaning: The best way to remove allergens from your carpets

For people who suffer from allergies or asthma, it’s important to keep the home clean all year round. There are a number of allergens that thrive in different climates and certain areas of a house. Exposure to irritants such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen and cigarette smoke can quickly turn a home from comfortable to unbearable.

With spring cleaning upon us, however, many homeowners use this annual event as an excuse to do more to the house than just the weekly surface wiping down and dusting. Since many allergens get trapped in carpet fibers, it’s a good idea to use this time of the year as an excuse to do some of the following:

Deep clean your carpets – Vacuuming up the dust and dirt and wiping away stains are both highly effective means of cleaning rugs, but every once in a while it’s a good idea to give your carpets a good deep cleanse. Hiring professionals to do the job can be expensive, but with products such as the Allersearch All-Rug Anti-Allergen Carpet Shampoo, you can shampoo your floors yourself.

Shake out your area rugs – If your rug is easy enough to carry, shake it outside before cleaning it. The best way to do this is by hanging it over a clothesline and beating it. If you are going to do this, don’t forget to first put on a Half-Face Reusable Respirator Gas Mask which ensures that you won’t inhale any allergens.

Vacuum your whole house – For this part of the cleaning process, a HEPA vacuum is the only way to go. These special devices have the ability to capture 99.97 percent of all particles, leaving your carpet allergen-free.
