Combating mold: How to prevent it and clean it up

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), exposure to mold can cause eye irritation, nasal stuffiness, wheezing and other unpleasant physical reactions. And, for people who suffer from asthma or allergies, these symptoms can quickly escalate from irritating to dangerous, threatening their ability to breathe.

This hazardous fungus can be found both indoors and outdoors, although it thrives when conditions are damp and humid. This is why it's often seen in parts of the home such as bathrooms, kitchens and basements where moisture is prevalent.

Generally, when it comes to keeping your house free and clear of this fungus, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind: prevention and cleanup. Here are some tips for accomplishing both of these tasks:

Mold prevention – To limit the amount of humidity in your home, it's a good idea to invest in a dehumidifier. These devices help by keeping your space dry so that mold can't easily grow. You can also put special mold-resistant bathtub mats and shower curtains in your bathroom. And, if a leak ever occurs in your ceiling, be sure to patch it up as soon as possible.

Mold cleanup – Products like the EnviroRite Multi Purpose Cleaner and the Allersearch AllerMold Mold & Mildew Inhibitor/Removal Spray are specifically manufactured to tackle mold, so you can be sure you're treating the problem with the most specialized supplies.

There are additional ways that people with allergies and asthma can reduce the risk of having a negative reaction in their home. If allergens are making it difficult for you to relax, you may want to consider investing in a whole house air purifier, which works by removing irritants directly from the air.
