Warm season great for seasonal businesses. Not so much for allergy sufferers

Many people are still out landscaping their yards despite it being winter. However, that's not good news for allergy sufferers.

While winter weather has finally begun to settle in many parts of the nation, many are feeling the lingering effects of a warmer-than-normal fall and early winter. For some, such as landscapers, that's good. For others, such as allergy sufferers, that's not so great.

"It's helping us with sales," said Tom Ferguson, general manager of American Beauty Landscaping in New Mexico. "People are looking around and saying, 'Hey, let's do some more landscaping.'" Others such as Cliff Turner of Cheap Tree Service found the "nice, sunny weather and warm days" ideal to cut down trees because he and his crew "didn't have much wind factor" and were "able to get in and rope everything out" without problems.

Dr. Asif Kahn, an allergy and immunology doctor, said that he's heard of higher-than-normal pollen counts as far as Alaska. "We're seeing people come out of the woodwork, who haven't gotten their shots in awhile."

The best way to defeat seasonal allergies is with the first freeze of the year. If your area still hasn't experienced one, don't wait around for it. Be proactive. Defend your home against allergens by changing filters, purchasing a dehumidifier or humidifier, and consistently cleaning your home or office. It's important to take be proactive against your allergies or they can get worse with time. Along with purchasing more allergy-friendly appliances and bedding, stay indoors when pollen counts are high.
