Virginia school systems consider new district-wide allergy policy

According to Food Allergy Research and Education, Inc. approximately 15 million Americans have food allergies. One in 13 children has a food allergy, which means that roughly two students in every public school classroom is affected by potentially deadly allergies.

It is for these reasons that the school system of Gloucester County in Virginia has begun to consider a district-wide allergy policy. This proposal would make bringing in outside foods for celebratory occasions against school policy. While Gloucester County isn't the only one to be considering such drastic measures, many in the school system agree that it is necessary to at least consider the option.

Between the stress that it puts on kids who are bullied or left out of social circles because of their allergy and the responsibility on teachers to look out for potential allergens and triggers, maintaining safe, clean learning environments for kids is becoming increasingly difficult.

"It would be a major change," said Gloucester's environmental health and safety manager, Shirley Chirch, in a statement to local paper The Daily Press. "The potential for a reaction is out there everywhere … so we need to be addressing all of the areas where students can be exposed to hazards. Our most important job is to keep our students and staff safe."

Many parents in the area have mixed feelings about the proposal as it will make providing food for their children more challenging with all the restrictions and guidelines, but it will also create a safe and secure environment for all students.

While schools and parents work together to find the best allergy solutions, protection from allergens and triggers begins at home. Be sure that your child has the care, medication and knowledge they need to protect themselves from harmful allergens by contacting Allergy Be Gone today.
