Ohio is loaded with allergens

The combination of farms and industry in Ohio has made allergies worse this year.

Let's say you live in Ohio and want to enjoy the outdoors this summer. After all, you've suffered through a long, cold winter and you deserve it. However, if you suffer from allergies, this may not be your year. Not only has it been one of the worst allergy seasons for many across the U.S., residents in Ohio have fared particularly badly.

Sickweather ranked Ohio as the eighth worst state in seasonal allergies from May 2014 to 2015. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation wasn't any kinder to The Buckeye State. Out of 100 cities, it ranked Dayton, Ohio as the eighth worst city in America with an overall score of 86.15 out of 100. That number signals a nightmare scenario for the region.

Ohio is located in a prime spot for allergens because of the Ohio River Basin. People in the Midwest usually suffer the worst because it has "a lot of tree pollen and grass and weed pollen," noted Dr. Summit Shah of Premier Allergy. The region is also bloated with heavy industrialization and farmlands, which produce a high amount of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide can make allergies worse. The combination of high pollen counts and carbon dioxide results in a worst-case scenario.

For those in areas hit hard by allergens this year, there are a number of ways you can manage them. Try focusing on purchasing the proper vacuum cleaners or wearing face masks when cleaning. Turn on the AC instead of opening windows when pollen count is high and try not to travel during peak time of the day which is between 10 am and 3 pm.
