Napster founder donates $24 million to allergy research

The Stanford University campus will now house a research institution in Parker's name.

In the world of allergy studies, there are few institutions that are responsible for promoting some of the leading findings. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases happens to be one of those thought leaders, and with a budget of about $4 billion annually, the center consistently leads to new therapies, vaccines and technologies that help patients each year.

Stanford University recently announced that they would be stepping up their allergy research game with the aid of a massive donation from Sean Parker, the founder of Napster and former Facebook President. Parker has agreed to donate $24 million to the university so that they can create an allergy research institution in his name.

The donation, reports say, is the largest single private donation to allergy research, and fits in line with Parker's personal interests.

Parker says that he has been hospitalized 14 times in the past four years for issues related to his allergies.

"The idea of creating a center stems from the 35-year-old Parker's lifelong battles with allergies," writes Joe Garofoli in a post for the San Francisco Gate. "He said he's allergic to peanuts, certain legumes, tree nuts and shellfish. He also has asthma. His concern has been heightened recently by the birth of his second child two weeks ago. His 2-year-old daughter shows no signs of allergies yet, he said."

Even with this kind of progress being made in the allergy research world, people should not expect that there will be a cure in the coming year. In fact, researchers say that it could be another 10 years before a potential cure comes about. Until then, it is important to have all the necessary allergy prevention products that you need.
