How to tell if you are suffering from flu or allergy symptoms

Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between allergies and cold symptoms.

While many non-allergy sufferers may think that seasonal allergies have died down for the winter, those who are prone to winter triggers know that couldn't be farther from the truth. The problem most people encounter is that their allergy season usually coincides with flu season which can leave them wondering: Are these allergy or flu symptoms that I am feeling?

It is a tough question, as a lot of times both make you feel about the same. The runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and tiredness can be attributed to both allergies and common colds. So how can you tell them apart?

Allergies are the result of an overactive immune system that is responding to otherwise harmless factors like pollen, dander, dust mites, foods or medications. Unlike the flu or common cold, allergies do not cause achiness or fever. Additionally, allergies usually cause a clear nasal discharge, whereas colds and flus will be more green or yellow depending on the virus.

Additionally, a common cold will usually take about two weeks to clear up whereas allergies can last all season long.

Southern states tend to suffer seasonal allergies in the winter as a result of pollen and other allergens. According to Dr. Mona Mangat of the Tampa Bay Times, "During the winter months we tend to see moderate pollen activity, but by early January high levels of tree pollen are accumulating. It is reasonable to try some of the OTC meds specifically for allergies, like antihistamines (Claritin, Allegra or Zyrtec) and nasal steroids (Nasacort Allergy 24HR). An allergist can confirm whether you have allergies, and if so, how best to treat them."
