It was a tough winter for many in the United States and it's turning out to be an equally challenging summer for some allergy sufferers. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) identified 100 cities allergies were likely to thrive this year. The list was based on pollen levels, medications used and number of board certified allergy specialists in the area.
The problem for many around the United States this year is spring allergies are likely to extend into parts of the summer. It's an unusual occurrence thanks to a surprisingly snowy, cold and wet winter across many parts of the country. Record snowfall hit New England, a polar vortex snapped long-standing records across the Midwest and Eastern Coastline and consistent warmth dominated many parts of the west coast.
Initially, most welcomed the delay in the allergy season after enduring such a brutal winter, but their joy will be short lived according to Dr. Clifford W. Bassett, a medical director of Allergy and Asthma Care of New York who spoke to Weather.com. He notes that it's important for suffers to have a "treatment plan" in place. While avoiding AAFA's list of allergy-stricken cities isn't on Bassett's treatment plan, it could be. Here are five cities that jumped up the farthest on AAFA's list:
5. Tucson, AZ. Up 17 spots to number 35
4. Springfield, MA. Up 23 Spots to number 26
3. Greenville, SC. Up 25 spots to number 21
2. Virginia Beach, VA. Up 37 spots to number 29
1. Miami, FL. Up 47 spots to number 28
