Are over-the-counter allergy medicines really doing their job?

Are you stocking up on allergy medicine for the holidays this year? Do you want to make sure you're not sneezing and wheezing when you're cooking the turkey and playing host to family? This isn't surprising. It's been one of the worst allergy seasons to date and many people are sick of it. Literally.

Two allergens you're likely suffering from are ragweed and mold. Ragweed is the most common allergen in the fall and affects nearly 20 percent of all Americans. Nearly 75 percent of Americans who struggle with pollen allergies also have a hard time handling ragweed.

To fight off these allergy attacks, most people who suffer from hay fever are turning to over-the-counter medicines, according to a team of researchers from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. And that's not a good thing. Others use prescription medicines, and the researchers said 51 percent of those studied reported feeling slightly better than the 33 percent of adults who said the same thing about their non-prescription medicine.

Dr. Eli Meltzer, a senior associate at Allergy & Asthma Medical Group & Research Center in San Diego, notes that the reason allergy medicine is so widely accepted is because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration keeps approving them.

While medicine certainly helps, make sure to also manage your allergies by staying inside during peak hours of day, ensuring your home and office is properly insulated, and purchasing devices like dehumidifiers or humidifiers if necessary.
